Rachel and I taught this lesson on volume and pastels. We focused the lesson on shape and blending colors to give shades and tints of colors. After our mini-lesson we worked on landscapes. I invited the students to focus on one particular area and make it very detailed. In my landscape example I focused on the grasses in the foreground. As an extension activity, I would have the students write a poem or story involving their background, focusing on adjectives that describe the picture, e.g. the gold blades of grass.
