This project was one of my favorites to date because students could really go anywhere with what we did. I would start by reading "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" with students, then discussing the story. After the story was read I would have students complete an Eric Carle-like project as I have of an insect that they like. They would then describe why they like it. Students would have to identify adjectives/verbs/nouns to describe their insect. It would be combined with Language Arts: students would have to write a story or describe their project. For example, my favorite insect is a butterfly because of it's beauty, freedom, ability to fly, and grace. I would then write a story of my butterfly getting lost on its way to get it's wings polished, using my adjectives/nouns/verbs that I defined.
This project would be most useful in lower grades (K-4) when students are learning their parts of speech, working on creativity, and learning to write stories of their own with their artwork. These skills can then be carried on throughout subjects. It also can be used in Math (shapes), Science (when discussing bugs), Language Arts (the writing of the story), and even Physical Education (dancing and moving like a butterfly).
