Juan Gris
"Guitar On a Chair"
Description:
- Guitar
- Shapes: circles, squares, triangles, organic
- Lines of many widths
- Texture with the canvas and paint strokes
- Overlapping lines to form basic shapes and familiar images
Analysis:
- Balance - with the guitar being the central focus of the painting
- Movement- the choppy shapes and lines give it a flow so your eye moves around the painting
- Pattern-use in the floor
Interpretation:
This painting is a still-life of a guitar, interpreted by Juan Gris. The artwork is just as the title indicates: "Guitar on Chair", but with a more interesting point of view. Gris could have just painted a guitar, but instead used multiple shapes of many colors and values to achieve a beautiful painting.
Judgement:
I think this painting was a success and something I would want to own. I love how he used the many shapes to make a united picture and idea, and how the viewer must interpret what they are seeing. I also enjoyed the artists use of texture and pattern throughout the painting to give the artwork some depth and space. Using pieces from artists like this one would be useful in the classroom in having students learn how to judge artwork and artist points of view, then carrying over to their own projects and idea development.
